Free Resources to help you through the Federal Marketplace

haley yeagley Feb 07, 2025

Navigating federal acquisitions can be complex and confusing, but fortunately, there are numerous free resources available to help small businesses, contractors, and professionals gain insight into various DoD and federal organizations and processes. These resources provide education, training, and tools that can enhance understanding of government procurement, structure, and policies. Below are some of the best free resources you can explore. This list is not all inclusive but simply a highlight of resources available to you.

-----

Defense Acquisition University (DAU)
DAU offers free online resources and reference materials covering all aspects of defense acquisition. This includes:

  • Interactive Adaptive Acquisition Framework
  • Overview of DoD 5000 Policies
  • Communities of Practice
  • DAU Glossary: A comprehensive reference of DoD acquisition-related terms.
  • Website: https://www.dau.edu

General Services Administration (GSA) Resources

The GSA provides key information about federal procurement, including schedules and contract vehicles that businesses can use to engage with the federal government. Free tools and resources include:

  • GSA Training Webinars: Covering topics on how to get on a GSA schedule and work with government agencies.
  • GSA Forecast Tool: Predict upcoming government contracting opportunities.
  • Website: https://www.gsa.gov

SAM.gov (System for Award Management)

SAM.gov is the primary registration site for businesses seeking federal contracts. It provides access to:

  • Active Contract Opportunities: Search for open solicitations.
  • Entity Registration: Required for any business seeking federal contracts.
  • Website: https://www.sam.gov

Federal Procurement Data System (FPDS)

FPDS provides detailed insight into past and current government contracts. Users can analyze trends, spending patterns, and vendor performance.

It’s important to note that awards can take 90 days or more to update and are manually entered so there is a level of human error present. Additionally, FPDS only represents unclassified contracts, and not all information is entered for every government contract. Finally, some organizations are exempt from uploading their contract information into FPDS therefore this resource is not all encompassing of every federal contract.

Acquisition.gov

Acquisition.gov is a valuable resource that publishes the Federal Acquisition Regulation (FAR), the primary set of rules governing federal procurement. It offers:

  • Access to the Full FAR Text: Helping businesses understand compliance requirements.
  • Agency-Specific Supplements: Providing additional regulations that apply to specific DoD components and federal agencies.
  • Searchable FAR Tool: Enabling users to locate specific clauses and provisions relevant to their contracts.
  • Website: https://www.acquisition.gov

DoD Websites and Organizational Pages

Various DoD components maintain public-facing websites with valuable information. Some key portals include:

  • Office of Small Business Programs (OSBP): Resources and guidance for small businesses looking to contract with DoD. Website: https://business.defense.gov
  • Defense Logistics Agency (DLA): Supplier requirements and business opportunities. Website: https://www.dla.mil/Small-Business/
  • DoD Service specific Acquisition Resources: Each service branch has its own contracting and procurement resources specifically designed for small business interest

Federal and DoD Web Searches

Simply doing an online search for information can provide a wealth of information. Here are some tips on what to look for when searching:

  • Using your search engine to research a specific topic (e.g., AFLCMC organizations, DoD technology strategy documents, etc.)
